First week reflections

February 3, 2011, by Carolyn

We’ve had Caleb all to ourselves for nearly a week now.

In that time, sleeping in (or sleeping, in general) has become a thing of the past, showering has become a luxury, and all conversations not related to the baby are decidedly absent (Seriously, what did we talk about before he came along?).

We’ve discovered baby gear inevitably ends up in every corner of the house, regardless of how often we pick it up (I’m staring at our coffee table, atop which sits one of Caleb’s socks, a burp cloth, a pacifier, an empty medicine dropper, the baby monitor, and Goodnight Moon, in addition to four days worth of unread mail and two empty coffee mugs).

We’ve taken on new “duties” without any nagging at all, perhaps as a way of giving the other a break. I shoveled the stoop and took out the trash. Kyle prepared dinner three times. He also baked cookies. From scratch. We make a good team.

It’s become quite apparent to me over the course of a NICU detour and whirlwind first week at home that life as we’ve known it has officially changed, all because we’ve gone from two to three. In his latest post Kyle eluded to an overwhelming loss for words while attempting to describe this experience. I share his sentiments. One day down the road, perhaps when we are sleeping through the night again and I have my wits about me, I’ll be better able to convey my thoughts on this journey. For now I’ll leave you with a few photos from Caleb’s first week at home, proof that miracles happen everyday.

We can’t wait to meet your little miracle man. So glad to hear Caleb is settled in at home. There is just something about baby gear that just makes a home complete.

Enjoy every minute, Carolyn–before you know it, he’s on the bus to kindergarten!
Think of you so often–and thanking God for such a wonderful outcome…..Caleb is a blessed little boy—-can’t wait to meet him!!!!!
